Inhibition of hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase by bilirubin.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Human bile is capable of inhibiting, in vitro, the action of human and equine liver alcohol dehydrogenase. The effect is attributable mainly to bilirubin conjugates. Sodium deoxycholate had negligible inhibitory ability. Preliminary evidence indicates that the mechanism of this inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase is related to the capability of bilirubin for complex formation with the zinc ion. The clinical implication of these findings is discussed.

Etiology of Physiologic Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia. Every newborn infant develop·s hyperbilirubinemia during the first week of life which is called "physiologic". There are several factors responsible for the development of physiologic hyperbilirubinemia, as follows: 1. Increased bilirubin production, due to a - Increased blood volume. b - Decreased R.B.C. survival time. c - Increased in...
متن کاملVARIATIONS BY EPINEPHRINE OF HEPATIC AND SERUM AMINOTRANSFERASES AND LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE IN THE RAT
Incubation of rat hepatocytes with epinephrine inhibited alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (80%) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (53%) activities with no effect on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Injection of epinephrine caused a progressive increase with time in hepatic LDH activity, being 52% at 24 h. Preinjection with propranolol eliminated the hormone effect and caused further ...
متن کاملProtective role of licochalcone B against ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity through regulation of Erk signaling
Objective(s): Oxidative stress has been established as a key cause of alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity. Licochalcone B, an extract of licorice root, has shown antioxidative properties. This study was to investigate the effects and mechanisms of licochalcone B in ethanol-induced hepatic injury in an in vitro study. Materials and Methods: An in vitro model of Ethanol-induced cytotoxicity in BRL cel...
متن کاملStudies on the properties of retinal alcohol dehydrogenase from the rat.
An NAD-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol : NAD oxidoreductase; EC 1.1.1.1) has been isolated and partially purified from the retinal cytosol of the rat. Its substrate specificity and sensitivity to inhibitors of hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase have been investigated. Ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol served as substrates for this enzyme but the K,,, values were more than 100-fold higher th...
متن کاملPretreatment of albino rats with aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus mauritiana protects against alcohol- induced liver damage
Purpose: The effect of the aqueous extract of Ziziphus mauritiana leaf on hepatic lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione and total antioxidant status was studied in chronic alcohol-induced liver damage. Method: Alcohol-induced liver toxicity was created by oral administration of 40% alcohol solution (v/v, 1ml/100g) to rats for 6 weeks. Other groups of rats were pretreated with 200 and 400 mg/k...
